Reflections on composing for winds
As I enjoy quipping with my students at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, "like so many composers, I am a failed trumpet player." And yet, experiences in band, at Kohler High School with Rich Tengowski, and UW-Stevens Point with Scott Teeple and Brendan Caldwell, deeply informed my voice as a composer. On a deep level, the sense of gesture and articulation that energizes music for winds and brass became essential to my own perspective.
The music represented on this page is also a testament to the collaborative process and the importance of musical friendship for young composers. The Saxophone Quartet and Soprano Saxophone Sonata were written for amazing friends at UWSP. Fantasy Pieces and the Quartet for Clarinet, Piano, and Strings were commissioned and championed by colleagues and friends from SFCM. The first performances of Harbinger and Jaunt came about from enthusiastic support from Scott Teeple and Patrick Miles. And Lyric Music is the result of a commission from the father of one of my dearest friends from UWSP.
All were great champions of new music and highly encouraging to all who took an interest in composing. And of course, Charles Rochester Young, my first great composition teacher, was a saxophone student of Donald Sinta, and an expert composer for band and wind ensemble.
Please send me a note if you are interested in any of these pieces. I am excited to reconnect with old friends, and bring these pieces I am so fond of out into the world!
