Greetings everyone!
Thanks to everyone for a very productive first day of Comp Workshop! I’m very excited for all the beautiful music you’ll compose this semester. I wanted to follow-up with a pdf of Bach’s solution to the given melody. It is very informative, and you may want to compare your own with his. Especially take notice of the unity in types of cadences, and use of 1st inversion chords to create clear, other linear, bass lines. If you are interested (this won’t be graded!), try filling in the Alto and Tenor. This is Chorale No. 4 in the Riemenschneider edition of Chorales, if you want to compare. In addition, I have created two Spotify playlists; one is of pieces I referenced in passing in class today. I tried not to overdo this. The second is a collaborative playlist that anyone may add pieces too. If there is something you want to look at next week, feel free to post. Please send me a note on the particular characteristics of form, harmony, counterpoint, motivic development, etc. that you are particularly intrigued by. Remember, we are looking for shorter works! Finally, I will be trying to keep the SFCM page on my personal website up to date (see below) with materials from class. Have a great weekend! Welcome back everyone! I am excited for another great year of making music and training our ears and artistry. I will try to get back in the habit of posting materials from class to this site for reference. PDFs of handouts attached below. Anything posted on www.sfcmtheory.com will be linked to. I want to share one quote that has stuck with me from this summer: "Every time you give yourself a pitch, you sacrifice an opportunity to develop your inner ear. Please keep this in mind as you practice. Octave drones are a great tool. Other than that, give yourself a single pitch per exercise, and hold it in your imagination.
Here is a recording of the excerpt for analysis.
